What does AMUSF stand for? The Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers.

The AMUSF represent a high standard of skilled and trusted makers, delivering top quality standards. This is why their courses are so incredibly sought after. They are ‘THE’ trusted organisation in Soft Furnishings.

This course is designed for those who want to make exceptional soft furnishings for their own home. It is designed for those who would like to set up a soft furnishing business, offering a higher standard to the usual. Or even, for those who absolutely love being creative and care about quality.

There are many courses out there but no others are The AMUSF course. This is a qualification that matters.

The AMUSF Essential Soft Furnishings certificate is a 1 year course . 2026/2027 in take will run on 2 Tuesdays each month. You will need to attend a minimum of 22 in studio days Between May 2026 and May 2027 . We can comfortably host 6 students per day.

Course content

22 in studio days, 2 making days at home scheduled, one business day, 2x at home projects to complete .

You will learn how to –

Curtains

  • Make a lined curtain with heading tape (sample size), 1 metre drop
  • Make an interlined curtain with border and hand finished headings (1x sample size), (1 x full size pair with 1 full curtain available for assessment)
  • Make an interlined curtain with triple pleats (1x sample size )
  • Make an interlined curtain pleated to pattern (1x sample size )

Roman Blinds

  • Make an  interlined roman blind  (1x sample size drop)
  • Make an interlined roman blind with contrast mitred border (1x sample size)
  • Make a full sized interlined roman blind with trim, installed on a fully complaint track, for assessment. This roman blind must be shown through photographic evidence of it correctly installed at window.

Cushions

  • Make a piped bolster cushion with invisible zip and decorative detail. This could include ruching, applique, patchwork or similar.
  • Make a piped cushion with concealed zip with additional decorative detail
  • Make a box cushion in a striped fabric with piping and a zip.

Accessories

Make a piped tieback using stiffened hessian, with machine joined piping ends for the best quality finish.

*As a gift from us to you, we offer all of our AMUSF students the opportunity to attend one of our in studio group Pelmet courses, FREE OF CHARGE. This is optional and must be completed within your course duration.

Course costs – £2950 + VAT to include habedashery, lining and interlining for sample pieces. You will need to provide your own main fabric for sample pieces. We will discuss most appropriate compostitions beforhand.

Excludes fabric and habedashery for full size assessment pieces.

£72 student registration fee to the AMUSF, this must be paid within the first 4 weeks of commencing your course and is not included in the £2950 + VAT

Your full sized assessment pieces must be made available for the agreed dates given at the end of the course by the external assessor.

This is a non refundable certified course. In exceptional circumstances you may be able to defer. This will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Unless exceptional circumstances which would be reviewed by the AMUSF, if you miss the assessor dates you will not pass this course and you will not be entitled to a refund or to defer. This is an incredibly popular course and does sell out. Please consider carefully whether you can commit to the full year. If you miss a course session, all aids will be provided to help you catch up and ensure you don’t miss out but it will be your responsibility to catch up in your own time or to pay for additional tuition. You will need to complete the student contract to confirm your place.
